There were three complementary modes of analysis in this research. 41 coded transcripts and fieldnotes for instances of literacy events and their connecting social practices. At this level of analysis, I learned that the family literacy context was structured by institutional literacy practices, a finding cited in the research literature (Anderson & Stoakes, 1984). Without an analytic base tied to a theoretical framework, data remain piles of notes, audiotapes, and work samples. Thus, my theorizing about what I was observing in the field was also attached to the research literature.
Though the focus of the book is on the Treaders, I, in places, point to the significance of my participation in this study. In particular, aside from clarifying my shifting role and relationship in the study, I utilize the concept of reflexivity in order to look critically at my own role in this research. There are few guidelines for reflexive practice in the research literature and even fewer examples of what reflexive practice might look like. Lather (1991) and Bourdieu and Wacquant (1992) made several suggestions with regard to reflexive research.
June holds a nurse's aide certificate. She has also worked as a school bus aide and as a housekeeper at a local motel.
