Interpreting Proust was once first released in 1994. What readers of Proust in English translation pass over, besides so much of his critics, is how accurately his writing works, how precisely his refined craftsmanship weaves the spell that turns out to enchant and distract those that come across it. Even critics who take in the idiosyncrasies of Proust's textual content, Maria Paganini asserts, refuse to check its limits for worry of working into the writer's planned opacities.

The very magnitude of the fascist threat, its success in mobilizing the masses, cast traditional notions of meaningful political activity into doubt. In such a situation, revolutionary action seems doomed in advance, defeated more effectively by cooptation than it ever could be by outright suppression. Making a bloody sacrifice of all coherence and all order: for it seemed that only the most intense movement of decomposition could have sufficient explosive force to disrupt the rigidity of fascist organization.
Bataille is in accord with Marx in insisting at once on the insurpassability and the inadequacy of political economy, or (as Gayatri Spivak puts it with regard to Marx) in rejecting "economic reductionism" and "the disavowal of the economic" alike (In Other Worlds, 169). Rather, its elements are unassimilable only insofar as they are not entities, and do not possess value or meaning in the manner usually understood. Mobile and evanescent, they cannot be posited, fixed, or located. La réalité hétérogène est celle de la force on du choc.
It is equally misleading to imagine a pure interiority of sensation prior to its expression (the idealist position denounced alike by Wittgenstein and by Derrida), and to imagine that sensation is therefore nothing but its expression in language and behavior (the position shared, oddly enough, by neobehaviorists and neopragmatists like Richard Rorty, and by literary deconstructionists like Paul de Man and his followers). It is an experience without categories and without unity, "où l'autre ne revient jamais au même [where the other never comes back to the same]'' (EI, 65), which has no positive content, but which for this very reason is "pure affirmation, elle ne fait qua'affirmer [pure affirmation, it only affirms]" (EI, 310).
